UPDATE: August 27th, 2007
well, we have our first entry for Comic Book Memories and this one comes from local comic fan Gene.
I think back to when I was growing up, and all of the wonderful trips to the mom and pop stores to buy comic books. Many a time the locals (neighborhood friends) would gather their money, whether it be allowance, odd jobs, birthdays, or just from saving or scrownging pop bottles to redeem and two cents each. We would go down when the new books arrived, and the bigger kids, or the ones with the most money, would usually choose first and the groups would never duplicate a selection. The comics would be shared by all, or as we called it go around the block.
Needless to say, if the gang was only boys on a particular day, one would have to be careful of what they selected (romance, funny animal or kids themes- NO WAY!) for fear of being teased unmercifully. One of the really awful things was to select a book with a pink cover(usually a pink background on the cover). One would never hear the end of it. Well, one time I defied the cardinal rule of buying comics with the boys, one afternoon. Superman #149 was sitting right out in front on the stands (this featured the Death of Superman story involving Lex Luther, Supes arch-enemy.
Everyone else had scrutinized and agonized over that issue, but all had passed. I was one of the last to pick and I stpeed right up and went for it! Hoots and hollers rained on me all the way home, but I didnt care. This was the book and I wanted it badly ever since I had seen it advertised in another comic a few weeks earlier. And do you know, I didnt mind all of the teasing, especially when each member of the group, on the way home, sidles up next to me and whispered when youre done, can I be next, so that the others couldnt hear. Did I feel like a million bucks!
